Working on movies has always been a dream of mine. Ever since I watched Carrie Fisher on the screen for the first time, going at light speed in a galaxy far, far away, I knew then that storytelling would be my path.
I originally started with learned the ropes of acting on stage, taking part in semi-professional plays, then studied French literature in college, thinking I could maybe make it as a screenwriter. But it was not quite my niche yet…
My name is Roxanne Soucy and I am a Video Production student at Durham College, aiming to, one day, make it as an established movie Director for fantasy, horror and/ or sci-fi.
The cinema industry has been changing a lot since the emergence of Netflix and the binge watching phenomenon. Fast released TV series are thriving online with the new standard set by Netflix, Amazon and Disney+. People love to watch movie undisturbed in the comfort of their own home clicking “yes” without shame when the app is asking you if you’re still watching. It gives the opportunity for content creators to embark into a fast paced industry, always wanting more entertainment, to the great disarray of geniuses like GRR Martin. (Yep, you need to write faster buddy!)
I believe there are 2 aspects that make a movie a success. First are the visuals. Every shot is prepared and thought for carefully in pre-production to make sure to translate the Director’s vision. Visuals are a great tool for storytelling; it is a language in itself. As for the other, I believe a good character development is the key to make everything relevant. If you can make it so that without rooting for the villain you can understand how he became the way he is, that’s a good story right there. Nothing is all Good or Bad. Nuances in the narrative can make the whole difference. If there is something I learned in my first year of college, is that preparation can turn out to be the most critical step in the making of a movie.
Hopefully, with study, practice and determination, I will be able to walk in the footsteps of legends like Joss Whedon or Guillermo Del Toro. Those men are truly dedicated to their arts and never gives up, even after the disaster of the Buffy movie of 1992, the series remake proved to be way more efficient and will always be a classic of teen horror television. Whedon has set in motion the best fandoms there is with Firefly (that unfortunately ended early) and nowadays with the Avengers, giving a new colorful comedy side to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which turned out to be a great success.
Bringing to life a vision that will make a great impact in people’s lives is all I’m asking for. If I could reach the audience’s emotions, I will know then that I made the right choices.
